Why do you come to work ?
Whatever the reason it is not to :-
The IEE Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment
can be used as a guide to assist compliance with the following regulations
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
The Electricity at Work Act (1989) and other regulations place a "Duty of Care" on employers and employees whilst in the workplace, especially with regards to Portable Electrical Equipment. The thing to remember is that you are not at home, and if you are an employer or have management duties, you must take steps to ensure that any portable electrical equipment on site is safe to use and does not present a hazard to anyone. In the context of these regulations you are classed as a "Duty Holder" - as such you must assess and balance the risks of any possible danger, against the cost, time and effort in removing that danger.
A sensible approach can consist of :
User Checks end users of equipment report any damage or faults
Formal Visual Inspection by suitable staff, results recorded
Inspection and Test by suitable staff or third party, results recorded.
